The European conference on promoting children’s physical activity

took place under the patronage of Ms Androulla Vassiliou, member of the European Commission

"Active Cities - Active Children"

The growing figures concerning abnormalities of movement and adiposity among children were followed by warnings of the sciences and policy to enhance the awareness and the measures to reduce these facts.

The question of a practical implementation remained often unanswered but for a change of situation it is indispensable. Only a few municipalities do have a concept to promote children’s physical activity which is sustainable and well-conceived.

The conference ‘Active Cities – Active Children’ which will be held on the 30 September and 1 October gave municipalities and organisations an overview of successful concepts to promote children’s physical activity from different European cities.

Addressed were all interested representatives of cities in the field of sport, youth, education and health as well as representatives of politics, science, non governmental sport organisations and associations who focus on the topic of children’s health and physical activity. Vistors got an overview of succesful programmes. Apart from the interesting presentations and the propsect market, the visitors had the possibility of taking part in workshops. In the workshops participants had the chance to learn how concepts and programmes are implemented.

As a basis for the implementation of an everyday sports culture among children networking between different sections as kindergartens, schools and sports clubs as well as a strong and intensive network between the different sections within a municipality are required. The conference revealed successful networking in this field.

The conference also focused on the adoption of guidelines and drawing the consequences to encourage a culture of sports in our children’s everyday life in European Cities and hand it over to the European Commission.
